How do I claim this tax credit for first-time home buyers?

The tax credit is claimed when you file your 2009 (or 2010, if applicable) Federal Income Tax Return. Complete and attach Form 5405 to determine the amount of your tax credit. Claim that amount on Line 69 of the 1040 Form. No other applications are required.
 
With the extension of the tax credit into 2010, the IRS also requires that the taxpayer attach to Form 5405 a copy of their HUD-1 settlement form (ie. closing statement) as proof of the complete home purchase.
